Primer for the Transportable Applications Executive
The Transportable Applications Executive (TAE), an interactive multipurpose executive that provides commonly required functions for scientific analysis systems, is discussed. The concept of an executive is discussed and the various components of TAE are presented. These include on-line help information, the use of menus or commands to access analysis programs, and TAE command procedures
Scaling and Duality in Semi-exclusive Processes
We discuss extending scaling and duality studies to semi-exclusive processes.
We show that semi-exclusive hard pion photoproduction should exhibit scaling
behavior in kinematic regions where the photon and pion both interact directly
with the same quark. We show that such kinematic regions exist. We also show
that the constancy with changing momentum transfer of the resonance
peak/scaling curve ratio, familiar for many resonances in deep inelastic
scattering, is also expected in the semi-exclusive case.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.
Exponential Distributions in a Mechanical Model for Earthquakes
We study statistical distributions in a mechanical model for an earthquake
fault introduced by Burridge and Knopoff [R. Burridge and L. Knopoff, {\sl
Bull. Seismol. Soc. Am.} {\bf 57}, 341 (1967)]. Our investigations on the size
(moment), time duration and number of blocks involved in an event show that
exponential distributions are found in a given range of the paramenter space.
This occurs when the two kinds of springs present in the model have the same,
or approximately the same, value for the elastic constants. Exponential
distributions have also been seen recently in an experimental system to model
earthquake-like dynamics [M. A. Rubio and J. Galeano, {\sl Phys. Rev. E} {\bf

Effective Widths and Effective Number of Phonons of Multiphonon Giant Resonances
We discuss the origin of the difference between the harmonic value of the
width of the multiphonon giant resonances and the smaller observed value.
Analytical expressions are derived for both the effective width and the average
cross-section. The contribution of the Brink-Axel mechanism in resolving the

User-programmer dialogue: Guidelines for designing menus and help files for interactive computer systems
This document is a set of guidelines to aid a programmer in making the various decisions necessary for a clear user-programmer dialogue. Its goal is to promote an effective and efficient transfer of information between programmer and user. These guidelines are divided into four sections: (1) Format, (2) Sequence, (3) Audience, and (4) Aim. Format, in terms of this study, means the spatial and structural presentation of information. Sequence deals with the procedural aspects of multiple panel displays. This section looks at the issues of timelines of presentation, modularization of information, and patterns of user behavior. Audience looks at the relationship among programmer, user, and message. It covers the issues of analyzing the audience's knowledge, attitudes, and needs, anticipating the audience's inferences, and identifying textual ambiguities. The programmer's aim or intention shows up in everything from tone to format. Aim considers the programmer's purpose
Quark cluster signatures in deuteron electromagnetic interactions
A suggestion is made for distinguishing 2N and 6q short range correlations
within the deuteron. The suggestion depends upon observing high momentum
backward nucleons emerging from inelastic electromagnetic scattering from a
deuteron target. A simple model is worked out to see the size of effects that

Evaluating matrix elements relevant to some Lorenz violating operators
Carlson, Carone and Lebed have derived the Feynman rules for a consistent
formulation of noncommutative QCD. The results they obtained were used to
constrain the noncommutativity parameter in Lorentz violating noncommutative
field theories. However, their constraint depended upon an estimate of the
matrix element of the quark level operator (gamma.p - m) in a nucleon. In this
paper we calculate the matrix element of (gamma.p - m), using a variety of
confinement potential models. Our results are within an order of magnitude
agreement with the estimate made by Carlson et al. The constraints placed on
the noncommutativity parameter were very strong, and are still quite severe

Production of human recombinant proapolipoprotein A-I in Escherichia coli: purification and biochemical characterization
A human liver cDNA library was used to isolate a clone coding for apolipoprotein A-I (Apo A-I). The clone
carries the sequence for the prepeptide (18 amino acids), the propeptide (6 amino acids), and the mature protein
(243 amino acids). A coding cassette for the proapo A-I molecule was reconstructed by fusing synthetic
sequences, chosen to optimize expression and specifying the amino-terminal methionine and amino acids -6
to +14, to a large fragment of the cDNA coding for amino acids 15-243. The module was expressed in
pOTS-Nco, an Escherichia coli expression vector carrying the regulatable X P^ promoter, leading to the production
of proapolipoprotein A-I at up to 10% of total soluble proteins. The recombinant polypeptide was
purified and characterized in terms of apparent molecular mass, isoelectric point, and by both chemical and
enzymatic peptide mapping. In addition, it was assayed in vitro for the stimulation of the enzyme lecithin:
cholesterol acyltransferase. The data show for the first time that proapo A-I can be produced efficiently in
E. coli as a stable and undegraded protein having physical and functional properties indistinguishable from
those of the natural product
